Sexy, intense and a bit overwhelming.
Starring: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan
Plot: When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey, as a favor to her roommate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana started to realize she wants him, despite his enigmatic reserve and advice, she finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana’s beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but in his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey – despite of the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family – Grey is consumed by the need to control everything.
Remarks: It is probably one of the most anticipated of the year and after a few months of delays, Fifty Shades of Grey officially releases in cinemas around the world tomorrow. I watched the film earlier today with a bit of a preconceived notion. I’ll admit it – I have never read these books. It just didn’t seem like something I would enjoy and seemed as some sort of book women would read to live out their inner dominatrix fantasies in the comfort and safety of their own homes. The more of the film I watched, the more I was getting into it. If I had to summarize the film into a word, it would simply be ‘sexy’. The whole film has a sexy vibe to it. Dakota Johnson did a fantastic job portraying Anastasia and really pulled off her ditzy character. Jamie was also a very intense Christian. Their chemistry was beautiful and even during dodgy sex scenes, you can’t help but get entrapped in their emotions. Speaking of the sex scenes, it’s clearly a reason many people will be watching this film and they were rather tasteful, intense and very sexy as well. Both Dakota and Jamie have beautiful bodies that is sure to get the entire cinema feeling a bit heated. There was quite a bit of nudity in the film, obviously, so be prepared for that – especially if younger people want to watch it. That being said, I think the story was a bit drawn out. It started feeling incredibly long towards the end and I think there was a lot that they could have cut out. Also, a lot of the sex scenes were repetitive and it’s not as if the film lacked in the number of those scenes. The play room was also a little bit too intense. Sure, people enjoy that but having such a good girl pushing her limits that far with a stranger? Hmmm… I just didn’t believe it. Luckily, those drawn out parts are paired with some brilliant music from people like Ellie Goulding, Beyonce, The Weeknd and more. That soundtrack is everything so make sure you get a copy of that after the film as sort of a souvenir. Oh, and just a pre-warning… The film ends with a major cliffhanger!
Oh, an interesting local fact. The film has over 66 000 pre-sold tickets and counting ahead of it’s release on Friday. The previous record was 16 000 for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2. How’s that for crazy! The Fifty Shades hype is here to stay!
Rating: 3.5/5
