Review: Duran Duran – Paper Gods

Duran Duran
Paper Gods (Warner Music)

Breakdown: British rockers, Duran Duran, are finally back with a brand new album! ‘Paper Gods’, which serves as the group’s 14th record, features their new hit ‘Pressure Off’ which features Mr Hudson and Janelle Monae. The new album sees them move into a more electronic, pop sound and they have managed to release quite a current album without losing their sound, despite the fact that they have been a group for 37 years!

How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 12.

What I Liked: Duran Duran have made an adult contemporary album that will not only please the ears of the fans that have been supporting them for years, but with a funky new sound, the band are sure to earn themselves some new fans with this record. Producers Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers have done a phenomenal with this album. The band challenged themselves with collaborating with some interesting folk – and it worked! Artists such as Kiesza, Janelle Monae, Lindsay Lohan, Mr Hudson and more appear on this album which really takes the record to new heights. This is definitely something unexpected, fresh and different from the group and one cannot help but commend them for taking a risk by exploring a new sound and still staying true to who the band is.

What I Didn’t Like: There are certain moments on the record where the band sounds a bit uncomfortable with their new sound. The band is clearly not targeting a young audience. How can they? There are some tracks that may just be too new-school for fans of the nostalgic Duran Duran.

Best Track: Danceophobia

Rating: 3.5/5
