Dr Dre
Compton (Universal Music)
Breakdown: Dr. Dre is back! After an absense of over 14 years, the rapper has dropped his third studio album which also serves as the official soundtrack to the film everyone is talking about – Straight Outta Compton. The record has been a long time coming and Dre has spent years recording the perfect album. Candice Pillay, a South African singer, also makes a few appearences on the record.
How Many Good Tracks: 13 of the 16.
What I Liked: There is nothing more magical than when an artist works on their piece of art after being inspired by something and that’s exactly what happened to Dr. Dre with this record after seeing the initial production of Straight Outta Compton which is, coincidentally about the rise of Dr. Dre’s group NWA who emerged from the mean streets of Compton in the mid-1980s and revolutionizes Hip Hop culture with their music and tales about life in the hood. With this, the album is one of the best hip-hop albums in the past few years. Lyrically, the album is honest and revealing and despite seeming to have run out of things to say at times, Dre delivers a brilliant record. Everything from the raps to the flow to the production is on point – exactly what we expect from Dre.
What I Didn’t Like: Since Dr. Dre decided to go back to his roots on this record, it would have been great to see the artists he worked with back in the day feature more on the album. While Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Ice Cube appear on the album, we wanted more.
