Review: Charli XCX – Sucker

Charli XCX
Sucker (Warner Music)

Breakdown: After the success of Boom Clap and Break The Rules, English singer Charli XCX has finally released her third studio album Sucker. The album is filled with pop punk anthems, making Charli one of the most unique artists we have seen in a while.

How Many Good Tracks: 11 of the 15.

What I Liked: The album is full of energy. Charli XCX has a new kind of rock and roll on the record which the pop industry has been lacking for quite some time. Many of the tracks have a timeless feel to them and, despite being current, also sound like something from the 80s. The album is light, fun and funky. Charli’s voice is something unique as well despite the fact that I hear a lot of Gwen Stefani in it. It’s got a rough tone to it and really works well with the genre she has decided to use her voice with. Charli has managed to create a sound of her own and will see her being one of the biggest pop stars in the years to come.

What I Didn’t Like: I know I should like the album more than I am but I can’t help feeling that each song features the same recipe and that Charli is staying in a sort of safe zone on the record. I can’t help but wonder if her music will really change the face of pop music or if she’s just here for her fifteen minutes of fame.

Best Track: Doing It (Feat. Rita Ora)

Rating: 4/5
