Review: Carly Rae Jepsen – E•MO•TION (Deluxe Edition)

Carly Rae Jepsen
E•MO•TION (Universal Music)

Breakdown: 29-year-old Carly Rae Jepsen has just dropped her third studio album just weeks before arriving in South Africa for a local tour! The album, titled E•MO•TION, has already spawned the smash hits ‘I Really Like You’ and ‘Run Away With Me’ and Carly changes things up this time around.

How Many Good Tracks: 11 of the 15.

What I Liked: I there’s one thing Carly Rae Jepsen knows what to do, it’s release catchy pop music. This time around, Carly’s sound has matured greatly and the proof is in the lead single ‘I Really Like You’. Carly has also added folk, indie and even some house elements to many of the tracks, making this album a truer representation of Carly than ever before. The album is filled with radio-friendly singles that is bound to get your summer started off on the right note. As the album’s title suggests, the record is filled with more emotion than we’ve ever heard from the pop songstress and she has taken all the necessary steps to push her career to the next step. While this album didn’t grab me on first listen, the more I listen to it, the more I become obsessed with the songs.

What I Didn’t Like: Many of the tracks on this album don’t allow Carly to showcase her vocal ability properly, creating an illusion which spoils her artistic integrity a little bit. That and the fact that many of the tracks have poor lyrical content are the only downers on the album.

Best Track: Run Away With Me

Rating: 4/5
