Review: Boyhood

A beautiful idea that lacked a decent story.

Starring: Ellar Coltrane and Ethan Hawke

Plot: Boyhood is a story of growth as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. The film charts the rocky terrain of childhood with scenes of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent. The film is sort of a time capsule even though there is no clear plot.

Remarks: This is one of the most unique films I have ever seen in my life. The film took 12 years to film and follows a boy named Mason who literally grows up in front of our eyes. The way the film was shot is so beautiful that one can’t help but be in awe. It’s also great to see how the young actors open up as characters in the film. That being said, the film had absolutely no story. We are taken on a journey seeing how Mason’s life moves from first grade to college but there is no fundamental plot and I found that incredibly weird. What’s even more weird is that the film has been getting rave reviews from all the big media outlets around the world and I honestly can’t understand why. Sure, the thought behind it is fantastic, but if the film had a plot, it could have taken the film into a whole other dimension.

Rating: 3/5

Boyhood releases on September 5th, 2014.
