Review: Andy Grammer – Magazines Or Novels

Andy Grammer
Magazines Or Novels (Sony Music)

Breakdown: American pop star, Andy Grammer, had one of the biggest songs of 2015 with ‘Honey, I’m Good’ and has finally released his second studio album ‘Magazines Or Novels’. The album features feel-good music with a country twist. Although released in the States late last year, the album is finally available in South Africa.

How Many Good Tracks: 8 of the 13.

What I Liked: Andy has found the perfect balance between pop and country. Thanks to TV shows such as Nashville and artists such as Taylor Swift, country music is becoming more and more popular. Andy has a full album of pop gems with just enough country flavour to give him a unique sound. His voice reminds me a lot of Maroon 5’s frontman, Adam Levine, and I’m impressed with Andy’s ability to control a song and take it to many dimensions with his vocals. Lyrically, Andy explores a variety of different themes and is rich in context. The songs are emotional, fun and catchy. This is some of the most well-rounded pop albums we have heard all year.

What I Didn’t Like: There are certain songs which have all kinds of vocal effects which are really unnesissary. Not only do they make the songs sound awful, but it also makes the listener question his talent. There also times when Andy tries too hard to mimic artists like OneRepublic and, because of the vocal comparison, Maroon 5 as well. The record also gets too predictable towards the end.

Best Track: Honey, I’m Good

Rating: 3/5
