Review: 2 Chainz – COLLEGROVE

2 Chainz

2 Chainz
COLLEGROVE (Universal Music)

Breakdown: It’s been a long time coming but American rapper, 2 Chainz, is back with his third studio album ‘COLLEGROVE’. The album was initially supposed to be a collaborative project between 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne but at the time of production, Lil Wayne’s label issues prevented him from releasing any music so he subsequently appears as a featured artist.

How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 13.

What I Liked: I’m a fan of collaborative albums. Especially if the artists have chemistry as strong as 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne do. The two complement each other lyrically and their vision is similar. When dealing with two big names, it’s important not to try outshine the other and the two not only give the other time to shine but also know each other’s strengths and use it to the music’s advantage. The duo have spent a lot of time on the album’s production and songwriting and it shows.

What I Didn’t Like: These two artists have both released some groundbreaking material in the past, however, there is nothing special about this particular collective. There are often times when songs sound more like studio demos than finished products. Sure, the beats and lyrics are on point but there should have been some more fine-tuning when it comes to the finished product.

Best Track: Gotta Love

Rating: 3/5
