YES! After a five-year absence, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced their return. The band announced that they will be releasing their 11th studio album, The Getaway, on June 17 this year and have also dropped the lead single off the project – a track named Dark Necessities. The new album will contain 13 brand new songs which the band has assured is worth the wait.
For the first time in 27 years, however, Rick Rubin steps away from the producer chair and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich takes the reins on the record. The song, however, is exactly what we expected from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song has a funky baseline which seems to be a trend in pop music lately but the rest of the song is almost a rehash of previous singles. Lyrically, the band have always been on form and this song is no exception but after a five-year absence, we were hoping to see some growth from the band.
That being said, the song proves that the band is still something special. The instrumentals on the song are fire and the song will serve as a great introduction to the band’s upcoming material. We’ve been waiting for new music from the Peppers for a long time, and we can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up in studio this time around.
