Off The Record With: Mi Casa

Mi Casa El Broide

They’re one of the biggest groups to ever come out of Mzansi and the boys of Mi Casa are celebrating their brand new album ‘Home Sweet Home’. The album’s lead single, Chocolat, is exploding on radio and it’s clear that Mi Casa strikes a chord with the people of South Africa. I sat down with lead singer, J’Something, and spoke to him about the new album, touring and their brand new music.

Your new single ‘Chocolat’ became a smash! What inspired the song?

We wanted to create a fun song that tackled the way we think of women. We love woman. But in life you will always find people having different tastes. Some people like dark girls, some people like white girls; some people like mixed race girls, some people are attracted to orange haired girls, and so on. We all have our preferences. What could we compare this too? Well girls love chocolate right? So let’s compare it to chocolate because you get so many different types of chocolate. Hence the line in the song, “Vanilla, dark, hazelnut, we all got our preferences with CHOCOLAT!” But the song also has a deeper meaning. We are so box minded when it comes to race. It’s either black or white. If I say I love chocolate people automatically think it means I love black girls. It’s true that I am, but I’m attracted to white girls, Indian girls and coloured girls too.

The song shows a new side of Mi Casa. How important is the evolution of your music to you?

It’s very important but you need to grow naturally and not because of pressure of trend. Grow organically in your own way. The song is still us but it is a bit different to what we have done before.

You just released your new album ‘Home Sweet Home’. How different is it to your previous albums?

It’s amazing! We can’t wait for everyone to have a copy. It’s a double disc with 25 tracks! This project was created all over the world and features some amazing artists. It’s our best work to date because of the amount of growing we did on the record. There is very good music on this album and that’s what we aim to do each and every single time.

How do you go about creating a new album from scratch? What’s the creative process?

If only you knew how random this album was made. We just decided one day that we should do a new album and next thing we knew, we were already in studio. Then we were travelling on our world tour and got into studios wherever we could and called up people we knew just to make music. There was no plan for this album. We just set some time aside for the studio and to make music. We landed with over 20 tracks on our lap.

You got back from a world tour last year. How different is it performing for an international crowd than a local one?

Everything is different. It’s like starting again. People are very open out there. They’re open to hear and appreciate new music. It was a huge eye opener as to how much potential the band has.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned on the tour?

Music speaks. Good music creates conversation. Make good music and you can perform anywhere in the world.

You guys are performing at multiple shows weekly. What’s the best and worst part about touring?

Doing what you love is a huge blessing. Being busy is hard on the body, though.
