Off The Record With: Lil Red

She’s the hottest new star in the local hip-hop industry and after making it as a dancer, Lil Red is finally ready to take on the music industry. She was signed to Da Les’ Fresh2Def label and her debut single ‘Million Miles’ is making waves on radio across the country. El caught up with the star.

Lil Red, you’re a dancer at heart. What made you want to join the local hip-hop industry?

I have always been a hip hop head so when I got the opportunity to start rapping, I didn’t even think twice. It really is a dream come true for me and I’m really grateful to be doing this.

What do you bring to the market that is fresh and unique?

As an 18 year old female rapper I am bringing a complete new sound to the market, combining different flavours and lyrical message in all of my tracks. That’s the freshness that the industry is lacking.

You caught the eye of Da Les before being signed to his label. Tell us more about that.

After I was spotted dancing on Super Sport for the World Cup, I was asked to dance for Da Les which was an opportunity I jumped at and really helped me move my career to the next level. He then thought I could make it as a rapper and gave me a chance and here I am today.

What inspired your debut single ‘Million Miles’?

Being a teenage girl, experiences myself and my close friends have gone through with love and boys inspired me to create Million Miles as I wanted to show young girls that it’s ok to take charge and be open about your feelings. No need to sit around waiting for Prince Charming.

How would you describe your sound?

I would definitely describe my sound as Youthful Swag. That’s exactly the feeling you get when you listen to my music.

Who inspires you?

My dad is my all time hero and inspiration. His insane work ethic, loyalty and commitment to everything he does has been a great lesson for me to follow in all areas of my life.

What can we expect on your debut album?

On my debut album you can expect complete versatility, bringing musical flavour from all over Africa.

What else are you getting up to in the next few months?

For the next few months I will be doing what Lil Red does best, dancing my heart out and making music. I am releasing my new music video and another single is in the pipeline so look out for that.
