He took the country by storm after winning the 11th season of the incredibly popular reality show Idols South Africa. Shortly after winning, Karabo dropped his debut album ‘Love Is A Verb’ and the lead single ‘Ding Dong’ has been doing well on radio around the country. Now that he’s settled into his new title as the current Idols South Africa winner, I sat down with the star and discuss his journey, the new album and what the future holds.
You took home the Idols SA crown. What was that experience like?
Being the latest Idols SA winner has been absolutely amazing. The reception I’ve received from people and the many opportunities I’ve had thus far is mind-blowing I’ve travelled to countries I’ve never been too such as England and Mauritius. I will also be travelling to the United States of America soon which I am really excited about.
What’s the biggest lesson you learned during the time on your show?
To remain inspired at all times, regardless how challenging the challenge may be. Also, it may be cliché but hard work pays off.
‘Ding Dong’ has been greatly received. Tell us a bit more about the song.
The song has an afro-soul vibe, written for a very special lady where I’m telling her that there is no one like her in this world. She is my one in a billion.
Your new album is in stores now. What prompted you to call your album ‘Love Is A Verb’?
I believe that love is a doing word. I’ve always been a firm believer that actions speak louder than words. It’s something I passionately believe so that’s where the album title came from.
You recorded your debut album so quickly after winning the show. What was the reason for this?
We wanted to capatalise on the hype of the moment and try by all means to sell as many albums as possible. The next season is already in production so I wanted to get my music out quickly.
Reality singing shows are still so popular in South Africa. What is it about the shows that South Africans can’t seem to get enough of?
I think it’s the way everything is portrayed on TV. People get to know the contestants on a personal level and they get to pick their favourites. To a certain extent it fun and they pick their winner.
Which track off the album is the most special to you?
Ding Dong. It is my first song that I have done in the music industry, my introduction to the music scene and I will forever be grateful for what that song has done for me.
Which song have you chosen as the next offering off the record?
Ngifuna Lo. I think it’s a beautiful song and will be the perfect offering for listeners around the country. It shows a new side of me.
What do the next few months hold for you?
I’m planning on touring the country and doing an international tour as well. I will also be working with Bebe Winans on a song.
