Off The Record With: Just Jinjer

They’re back! After a good few years taking a well-deserved break, the folks from Just Jinjer have answered our prayers and have released a brand new album ‘Everything Since Then’. Their new single ‘Wonderful World’ has proven that the band is a force to be reckoned with. We chat to lead singer Ard Matthews about the new album, the break and why South Africans can’t get enough of Just Jinjer.

You guys have been away for a long time. What was the chemistry like when you all got back into studio?

It was really natural and easy, man. It shows how strong our bond is. There is a ton of respect between us and I think that’s been the key to us sticking together for so long.

How different is the new album from your previous material?

We think it’s quite different in many aspects yet nothing has changed for us because it’s always been about melody and songs for us more than any trickery and any ‘cool factor’ things. Even though there’s a slight electro vibe about it, it’s still all about the songs and message!

Take us through the creative process behind the album.

Well, I came to the party with 5 songs plus a cover idea. I then told the guys that we had to co-write another 6 songs. We really came together on that and ended up writing and recording 6 songs in 6 days. It was so fun we almost forgot we were working.

Were you nervous to release the album’s first single ‘Bright Light’ after your hiatus?

I almost think we’ve been through enough to not be as nervous as we could’ve been. For us now it’s all about just continuing to release music because we want to. Not because we have to, or have to have success for that matter. This time round it’s all about the love and taking responsibility for the platform we’ve been given to spread our positive message.

What inspired your new single ‘Wonderful World’?

It’s a follow on to the ‘Look Up’ campaign that was happening a while ago. Basically just encouraging people to “live your life while you waiting” (for your next insta or twitter update). We sing “When you’re up from your download, look out your window, you know it’s a wonderful world” We’re all totally addicted to our online worlds. It’s just a song to remind everyone else that is whole other world out there too.

What is it about your music that has identified with so many South Africans over the past few years?

I think it’s because we write about real things that most people can relate to. We try to stay away from writing songs about big butts and cash where possible – not that we’re adverse to either of those things. It’s been such an honour hearing from young and old people telling us about how one of our songs have stuck with them through a time of their lives and how it helped them get over stuff or how it’s associated with good times.

You guys are on the road a lot. What is the best and worst part of touring the country?

Well, it’s all about the attitude at the end of the day. If you can truly understand that it is all a paid holiday how can it ever not be fun. That said, the novelty of going from hotel to hotel can get very old very quickly. Everyone loves their own bed no matter how fun a tour is.

What can we expect from you guys over the next few months?

We’ll be sending our next singles to radio and hopefully we’ll be playing in a city near you. We look forward to sharing our message and journey with our friends and we are super grateful for the continued love and support.
