My New Venture: The RISE Academy of Entrepreneurship

For those of you who know me personally, you would know that myself and Lee-Roy Wright have started up a PR and Events company called The Platinum Club earlier this year. The company is starting off nicely and we can’t wait to see how it grows over the next few years. One thing we have realized is, however, that when opportunities come your way, you MUST grab it with both arms and that’s exactly what happened when we were approached by under 18 company UParty.

UParty is a company that hosts under 18 parties in schools around the country and raises funds for the school in doing so. One thing I admire about this company is that they are incredibly driven and saw a gap in the market – a gap whereby they could groom the youth of today who want to be in the entertainment industry. Thus, the RISE Academy of Entrepreneurship was born.

The academy will be split into theory and practical lessons. In the theory part of the course, lecturers will equip the leaders of tomorrow with all the relevant tools they would need, getting the very best head-start in the world of business and in managing their own careers. This is compulsory for all students. Then, the child will be able to choose a practical elective. This would either be in Pure Business and Entrepreneurship, DJing, Dance or TV Presenting.

Lee-Roy and I were approached to design a curriculum which would kick-start the minds of kids from the age of 11 – 18 with relevant knowledge regarding television skills, the equipment and the entertainment industry as a whole. We sat for hours constructing the curriculum and we believe we have come up with one of the best television courses South Africa has ever seen. The course will also see an array of guest lecturers who will showcase their talents in their respective fields – from live TV to continuity presenting to holding down the camera on your own.

It’s a dream of many to be in front of the camera but there are many underlying advantages of taking this course. From learning fundamental interviewing skills to understanding the equipment used in making a television show but most of all, building confidence which will overflow into every aspect of the student’s life. The course will equip the student with enough knowledge to start their journey into the world of television.

The course will run for a period of 36 weeks (split into terms). For more information about the academy, the structure, pricing etc., check out their website here.
