If you’ve been anywhere near a radio or a music TV channel, you’ve more than likely heard American pop star Meghan Trainor’s new single, No. The song serves as the lead single off her upcoming second studio album, Thank You, and it has already shot up to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is heating up the charts here in South Africa as well as countries such as Canada, Australia and Mexico.
The song is a big step away from the sound that dominated Meghan’s debut album. The growth is tremendous and is incredible to see. The singer does a throwback of sort and gives us a modern rehash of the R&B and pop sound that the likes of TLC, Britney Spears and *NSYNC made famous in the late 1990s and early 2000s. What Meghan does keep, however, is her spicy lyrics, sass and sense of female empowerment. The song is beautifully produced with a strong guitar-driven riff that steers the song and Meghan has kept it fresh – especially since her debut album was released not too long ago.
I must be honest and say that although Meghan has had hits such as All About That Base and Dear Future Husband, I didn’t get the hype. In fact, her face even annoyed me. However, after releasing this track, I understand why she won the Best New Artist Grammy Award. Not only is she a talented songwriter, but this complete 180 degree turn also shows that she is a true artist as well. We can’t wait to see what else she has in store on this upcoming album.
