I’ve never hid the fact that my knowledge in the Afrikaans music industry is rather limited but when a good friend of mine, Conrad Schwellnus, asked me if I wanted to join him at the 2nd Ghoema Awards I couldn’t say no.
I went to the awards last year and I had a great time so I was keen to check it out again and I’m so glad I did. Barry Pretorius and the team put on a world-class event. I loved how the awards flowed, how the winners kept their ‘thank yous’ short and sweet and how much effort the performers put into their act.
Elvis Blue, Eden, Corlea Botha and Jay stole the show, for me, with their electric performances and awesome stage presence. With regards to the awards, however, it was clearly Elvis Blue, Joshua Na Die Reen and Karlien Van Jaarsveld’s year.
The awards were fantastic and I was happy to see some familiar faces around Carnival City’s Big Top Arena – especially my friend Willem Botha!
